Ludlow - Resting place of A.E. Housman
150 years ago A.E. Housman was born, not in Shropshire as you might expect but in Bromsgrove. So why do we celebrate this Bromsgrove Lad’s birthday? Because Housman’s most famous poetic works ‘A Shropshire Lad’ drew inspiration from the blue remembered hills of our fair county, describing Clunton, Clunbury, Clungunford and Clun as “the quietest places under the sun” - a true Shropshire Lad at heart then.
Ludlow, described as ‘the loveliest town in England’ is Housman’s final resting place. His ashes rest in the graveyard of St. Laurence’s, the town’s cathedral-like church. This ancient town and Shropshire’s gastronomic capital, sits alongside narrow wooded valleys and picturesque villages in an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty.
Ludlow’s annual food and drink festival is an ideal time to come and raise a glass to Housman and explore some of Ludlow’s busy markets, delicatessens, fine eateries and drinkeries. With its splendid position high above the River Terne and its imposing castle, this is one town with all of the necessary ingredients to inspire you.
