Much Wenlock – Birthplace of the Modern Olympics

William Penny Brookes Much Wenlock

No! We’re not kidding and this is no fanciful claim, for it was here that local Dr William Penny Brookes created the Much Wenlock Olympics that ultimately inspired Baron de Coubertin to create the Modern Olympics we have today. Even the I.O.C. acknowledges Dr Brookes contribution to the revival of this global event.

Much Wenlock is especially celebrating this year as Dr Brookes was born in the town 200 years ago exactly. This little market town still holds its very own Olympics every July and best of all Britain wins all the medals!

Pop in to Wenlock Priory to see a stunning collection of ruins with attractive gardens and topiary. Reputedly, King Arthur chose to hide his crown jewels here (good hunting!). As you head on to Ironbridge, you will pass Buildwas Abbey, a former monastery and one of the best preserved 12th century examples of a Cistercian church in Britain.
